World Schools Debate students participate in opposing teams of three during each debate. A WSD team can have as many as 5 student members that will rotate speaking positions and roles from round to round. Students will debate motions of fact, value, and policy. As an international debate format, students are asked to examine each motion in a global context while taking their opponents at their highest ground, relying heavily on logic and examples. With one team representing the government and the other the opposition, each team presents their case and then has the opportunity to engage in refutation, points of information, and the weighing of impacts.

How we teach | How students grow

ISD’s World Schools Debate program focuses on techniques that introduce students to the unique qualities of this international format and empower them to succeed at both domestic and international tournaments. Utilizing a combination of lectures, workshops, drills, practice debates, office hours, and discussions, we have built a robust curriculum that can be individualized to meet the needs of all of our students – whether this is their first introduction to World Schools or they are an experienced debater in this format. Our experienced faculty present well-crafted lessons that stress active learning and mastery of skills and concepts, which sets them up for success throughout the entire season.

We believe that World Schools equips students with the opportunity to grow as global citizens and create lasting awareness for change. Our program focuses on empowering youth voices and focuses on the individual debater to instill values and character. World Schools Debate is one of the newest and fastest growing debate formats in the United States, and we can’t wait to continue to grow the WSD community this summer at ISD 2021!
