Extemporaneous speaking challenges both a student’s speaking skills and argumentative skills. Each competition round requires the speaker to present a speech on a completely different topic. The topics covered are based on global current events, and almost any event is fair game – from Arctic shipping lanes to Zimbabwean politics, and everything in between. With only 30 minutes to prepare, students give a seven-minute speech entirely without notes. Extempers master the art of researching, processing, and then communicating challenging topics.

How we teach | How students grow

Our program focuses on techniques that turn the novice speaker into a confident competitor and the experienced speaker into one prepared to win at the highest levels. Our workshops blend content area lectures, speech preparation strategy labs, and organizational skills for team squads.

Our experienced faculty present well-crafted lessons that stress active learning and mastery of skills and concepts. The workshops offer campers many practice rounds where faculty provide feedback and strategies to help extempers reach the next level of competition.

Extemporaneous Speaking at ISD: Online

ISD: Online provides Extemp Speakers a unique opportunity to continue their growth and development.  Our faculty’s experience with remote learning and focus on individual instruction ensures Extemp Speakers receive structured lessons and continue to grow as speakers from the comfort of their own homes. By primarily focusing on content lectures and one-on-one instruction, our curriculum is tailored to each Extemp Speaker’s experience level, goals, and needs.

From Our Curriculum Director

“Our curriculum focuses on teaching students how to make compelling, interesting arguments that will appeal to a wide range of audiences. Whether a student is a new speaker or a National finalist, our individualized approach ensures they develop and hone the skills needed to succeed at the next stage in their forensics career.”
