Extemporaneous speaking challenges both a student’s speaking skills and argumentative skills. Each competition round requires the speaker to present a speech on a completely different topic. The topics covered are based on global current events, and almost any event is fair game – from Arctic shipping lanes to Zimbabwean politics, and everything in between. With only 30 minutes to prepare, students give a seven-minute speech entirely without notes. Extempers master the art of researching, processing, and then communicating challenging topics.

How we teach | How students grow

Our program focuses on techniques that turn the novice speaker into a confident competitor and the experienced speaker into one prepared to win at the highest levels. Our workshops blend content area lectures, speech preparation strategy labs, and organizational skills for team squads.

Our experienced faculty present well-crafted lessons that stress active learning and mastery of skills and concepts. The workshops offer campers many practice rounds where faculty provide feedback and strategies to help extempers reach the next level of competition.

Extemporaneous Speaking at ISD: Online

Although there’s no online substitute for our in-person lab experience, ISD: Online provides Extemp Speakers an opportunity to continue their growth and development.  The unexpected disruptions this spring pose unique challenges to every facet of our lives; however, our experience with remote learning and focus on individual instruction ensures Extemp Speakers receive structured lessons and continue to grow as speakers. By primarily focusing on content lectures and one-on-one instruction, our curriculum is tailored to each Extemp Speaker’s experience level, goals, and needs.

Learn more about event-specific plans for ISD: Online here. These plans are a work in progress and more will be added as we get closer to this summer.
