Willie debated for 4 years at Fairmont Prep in Anaheim, California. During that time, he reached quarters or better at Berkeley, Arizona State, Grapevine, Stanford, Season Opener, Apple Valley (2x), Glenbrooks, and NDCAs (3x); was ranked 1st in both NSDA points and TOC bids; and received invites to the Ivy Street Round Robin, Cal Round Robin, and Durham Round Robin. He believes quality research and maximizing fun are critical for success in speech and debate. As an ISD alum, he knows how integral camp can be to a debater’s growth and is excited to return this summer!

Owen Casey
Owen Casey is a Sophomore at Duke University studying Political Economy, Data Science, and Energy, with experience in geopolitical consulting. In high school, he won the NSDA Senate Leadership Bowl, Yale, and the Tournament of Champions (PO), in addition to placements at the Harvard Round Robin, Princeton, UKSO, and Bronx, and finals at Harvard (2x) and NSDA Senate (2x). Cumulatively, he was ranked 3rd by the NSDA (2025) and 1st by the Congressional Debate Index (Fall 2023), with 17 TOC bids. He was the founding member of his school’s congressional debate team, helped build the Equality in Forensics congressional coaching program, and now debates across the world as a varsity member of the Duke Debate Society. As a coach, he specializes in judging appeal and helping students find their unique and individual voices. He is thrilled to be a Junior Instructor this summer (even if he is a rival of UNC deep down).
Lexie Toshav
Lexie competed for 7 years for Isidore Newman School in Louisiana, primarily in extemporaneous speaking, impromptu speaking, and extemp commentary. Most notably, she was a finalist in extemporaneous speaking at the UT Longhorn Classic, the New York City Invitational, and the California Invitational, as well as the two-time Louisiana state champion. In addition, she was an NSDA finalist in extemporaneous commentary. She is a two-time ISD alum, and is so excited to return to a camp that had such an impact on her speech and debate career!
Martene Campbell
Martene Campbell is the Director of Debate at Episcopal Collegiate School in Little Rock, AR, where she also serves as chair of the History and Social Science Department. Additionally, she serves as Executive Director for the Arkansas Communication and Theatre Arts Association as well as Student Congress Permanent Director for the Association.
Most recently, she was elected District Chair for the Arkansas NSDA District. She’s coached multiple state champions in Congressional Debate as well as semi-finalists and finalists at national bid tournaments.
Eddy Cavazos
Eddy Cavazos holds a B.M. in Vocal Performance from Texas A&M University – Kingsville and an M.F.A. in Musical Theatre from The Boston Conservatory. In addition, Cavazos is a 200 Hour Registered Yoga Teacher and Social Emotional Learning Facilitator via Breathe4Change. Cavazos serves as Head Theatre Director, Speech Coach, and UIL Academic Coordinator at Harlingen High School South and Program Director for Musical Theatre at the Harlingen Performing Arts Conservatory, located in South Texas. Cavazos has coached numerous finalists and champions at Yale, Glenbrooks, and Harvard, Texas Forensic Association State Champions, University Interscholastic League State Champions, NIETOC Champions, and NSDA National Champions in Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Prose, and Storytelling. Cavazos received NSDA Coach of the Year Awards for the Gulf Coast District in 2021 and 2023.
Cavazos’ coaching philosophy is rooted in artistry and authenticity while providing his student collaborators with the necessary tools to explore the power of both literature and their point of view. He is thrilled to join the ISD team in 2025 as a Senior Instructor in Interpretation of Literature and cannot wait to support you in your journey and watch you thrive!
Ethan Massa
Ethan is a graduate of the University of Florida with a degree in Philosophy. He also served as the director of Lincoln Douglas debate for the Florida Blue Key Tournament. His students have won tournaments such as Bronx, Valley, the Harvard Round Robin, Stanford, the Tournament of Champions, and NSDA Nationals. Ethan’s specialties include theory debate, speech execution/strategy, and argument construction. In his free time, Ethan greatly enjoys football and mixed martial arts – and if you ever have trouble finding him, it would be helpful to start your search at the nearest sushi bar.
Esther Oyetunji
Esther competed in high school Speech and Debate for four years, competing in several categories such as Informative Speaking, Original Oratory, and Program Oral Interpretation. As a member of the American Heritage Speech team she championed various tournaments ranging from Florida Varsity State, The Barkley Forum at Emory University, and Harvard University’s International Tournament. Most notably, she is a three time, back-to-back-to-back NSDA National Champion in Original Oratory. Esther is so excited to give back to a community that has given her so much!
Rachel Mauchline
Rachel Mauchline is the Assistant Director of Speech and Debate for Durham Academy in North Carolina. She also teaches Middle School Speech and Debate at Durham Academy. Rachel was the recipient of the 2022 National Debate Coaches Association Rising Star Coach Award, the 2020 National Speech and Debate Association District Leader Commendation, and 2022 University of Arkansas Communication Department Early Alumni Award. Rachel formerly taught at Cabot High School in Arkansas as the Director of Speech and Debate until Fall 2023. Rachel also serves the NSDA as a Tabroom Superuser and previously founded a nonprofit called debateARkansas with the aim of making debate more accessible. Rachel is looking forward to another year working at ISD.
Jared Shapiro
Jared is currently studying at The Ohio State University and is an alumnus of Hawken School in Cleveland, OH. At Hawken, Jared served as the Interpretation Captain as well as the Vice President of Speech his senior year. Jared was ranked as high as 1st in the country in both HI and POI, and competed since 7th grade. Jared has reached late elimination rounds at many national tournaments including 2nd at Yale, 6th at Glenbrooks, 5th at GMU Patriot Games, 2nd at the Barkley Forum, Semifinals at the UK TOC, Top-60 at NSDA Nationals, and was a four time NSDA national qualifier. In addition, he championed the Sunvitational, the Stanford Invitational, the New York City Invitational, and was the 2019 OSDA State Champion in POI. Outside of speech, Jared can be caught dancing in public, talking in different voices at all the wrong times, and trying to put a smile on people’s faces. Jared is excited to continue giving back to the activity that gave him so much, and he can’t wait to welcome more Interpers into the ISD family in 2020!
Chase Williams
Chase Williams is the Director of Speech and Debate at Taipei American School and the Founder and Director of The Institute for Speech and Debate. In his 15+ years of coaching, Chase has coached multiple NSDA National Champions and Top-6 finishers across multiple events, including most recently the 2025 NSDA National Champions in Policy Debate. Chase’s team was the first international team in the 100 year history of the NSDA to win a national championship.
Chase’s students have advanced as far as Semifinals in PF and Quarterfinals in CX at the TOC, and have championed or been in the final round at Emory’s Barkley Forum, The Glenbrooks, Berkeley, Yale, Minneapple, Blake, and Stanford. In his 8 years as the Director of Speech and Debate at TAS, Chase has built a program that routinely achieves high levels of success, including 5 NSDA school awards in the last 5 years.
Before transitioning to education and coaching full-time, Chase was a political operative at the local, state, and federal campaign level. He has remained involved in the political arena as a volunteer, fundraiser, and activist. When not flying around the world to attend tournaments, Chase loves to travel with his husband, Mark and is a committed Disney adult.
To Chase, ISD is so much more than a summer camp, it is his extended family and he can’t wait to welcome more students into that family this summer!
